Why do the Americans say “Merry Christmas” and the British “Happy Christmas”?

You know what’ll blow your mind even more? We do say Happy Christmas (not all the time, no-one would lynch you for Merry Christmas, I say it actually). but when you include the Happy New Year afterward, it *must* be Merry Christmas.
